Green Kudos from Environmental Leader
Green Perks is getting special attention—from green shoppers and green media, too. You love it because it connects you with conscientious products and companies and gives you ways to enjoy them for less. Magazines like Environmental Leader take notice because the app is part of a growing national trend.

Environmental Leader is the premier energy and environmental news source for business. In the course of reporting on the success of eco-friendly mobile phone apps, they singled us out for the Green Perks application designed exclusively for the T-Mobile community.

One million trees (and counting.)
T-Mobile's green initiatives have always centered around a very simple idea: if we each do a little, we can really change a lot. Thanks to the contributions of customers and partners, we can officially quantify what a lot really means: One million real trees in four regions that really needed them.

This collaborative effort began in April of 2008 with T-Mobile's Plant-a-Tree Campaign. The program, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, featured a pledge to plant a tree for every customer who signed up for paperless billing. It was our way to thank customers for doing their part.

In April of 2009, we took the program a step further and launched the Mobilize initiative, which included the introduction of the T-Mobile Green Account. It was then that we set the goal to pledge one million trees by the end of 2009.

The T-Mobile Green Account combines three great ways to save paper (and trees) in one no-hassle package: Paperless Billing, EasyPay and e-mail updates. T-Mobile again partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation and pledged to plant a tree for every customer who signed up for a Green Account, recycled a phone or purchased the Motorola W233 Renew eco-phone.

More recently, T-Mobile launched the Mobilize Forest™ on Facebook. This free, fun and fact-packed Facebook® application is a great way for people to learn their carbon footprint, reduce their impact and help plant up to 100,000 real trees.

Together, all these initiatives can multiply our positive impact – and go far beyond one million trees.

Make a difference with the Mobilize Forest™.
T-Mobile has teamed up with the Arbor Day Foundation and Carbonfund.org to create the Mobilize Forest. This free, fun and fact-packed Facebook® application is a great way for people to learn their true carbon footprint and help plant up to 100,000 real trees.

The Mobilize Forest™ enables Facebook users to:
  • Get a baseline of their real carbon footprint with a tool from Carbonfund.org, the leading nonprofit carbon offset and climate solutions organization.

  • Grow and nurture their own virtual forests by learning eco-facts, taking quizzes, tracking their progress and more.

  • Invite their friends and see how they stack up against each other.
Best of all, the more people play, the more real trees we'll plant -- up to 100,000 through a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation.

Going green can really take you places.
Last spring, T-Mobile sponsored a sweepstakes to reward Green Account customers (paperless billing, electronic bill pay and e-mail communication) for doing their part to help the environment. Imagine going away on an all-expenses paid six-day eco adventure somewhere in North America and taking your five closest friends or family along, too.

That's exactly what is happening to James Augherton, the grand-prize winner of our Mobilize with T-Mobile Sweepstakes. James, like all customers who signed up for Green Accounts by May 31, 2009, was automatically enrolled in the sweepstakes.

The most difficult decision was which adventure to go on: the "Spirit of the Rockies" trip, the "Back-to-Nature" package in South Carolina or the Maine multi-sport package, which meant getting up close and very personal with the wildlife and pristine landscape of Acadia National Park.

James chose the Maine multi-sport package.

The trip will kick off in Camden, often called Maine's prettiest village. Our lucky winners will take a rolling bike ride then kayak through the pristine waters of Lake Megunticook. They will also have the opportunity to try their hands at candlepin bowling, check out the Farnsworth Museum, hike Mount Battle and take in the stunning views of Camden Harbor.

The trip then moves on to Acadia National Park, where they can explore the park by bike and on hikes. They can also discover the many jewels of the park including: Champlain Mountain, Otter Cliffs, Egg Rock and the Cranberry Isles. The trip includes round-trip airfare, five nights of accommodations, all meals and so much more.

It will be an adventure to remember.

Deutsche Telekom: A Global Leader in Corporate Responsibility
T-Mobile USA's parent company, Deutsche Telekom, has announced an ambitious goal to play a leading role in Corporate Responsibility (CR) on a global basis. Environmental responsibility goes retail.
T-Mobile owns thousands of retail stores, each of which provides bags to our customers for their purchases in our stores. We're committed to offering some of the most responsible bags available and reducing the impact these bags may have on the environment.

Offsetting Plastic

All plastic bags used in our retail stores are printed using water-based inks to minimize water emissions. These inks do not contain any heavyweight metals and are filtered through a printing system to avoid any unprocessed waste entering the water system.

Our current plastic bag is made from up to 40% recycled content. These bags also include up to 20% Calcium Carbonate, which is an inert and readily available mineral. This material acts as a filler to further reduce the use of polyethylene. Together, that means a 60% reduction in the use of virgin (new) polyethylene resin and a reduction in the overall carbon footprint of the bag.

In addition, our manufacturer is a founding member of the Environmentally Preferred Rating (EPR) certification program. Their plant was among the first to be certified by an independent auditor as following best manufacturing practices in terms of liquid and airborne emissions, the use of recycled materials, resin pellet control, and elimination of heavy metals.

Recycling helps the environment and the community.
One of the easiest – and most important – things we can all do is recycle our old wireless devices. The T-Mobile Handset Recycling Program tries to make this as easy as possible by accepting handsets for recycling at all T-Mobile stores and providing a postage-paid envelope for those who prefer the mail.

More than phones.
We also accept wireless PDAs, wireless computer cards, spare batteries, phone chargers, cables, headsets, earpieces, cases, clips, and cradles. Not only does this encourage reuse, it also helps dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. Find out more. >

Polaris Data Center – The IT Green Machine
At T-Mobile, we're always striving to reduce our impact on the environment. It's good for business, and good for the earth. That's why energy efficiency was a priority when we created Polaris, our newest enterprise IT facility. The Polaris Data Center opened in March, 2009 and is located in East Wenatchee, Washington.

Polaris is helping T-Mobile more efficiently serve its 32+ million customers.

Renewable power. Runs on renewable energy, which helps reduce power costs.

A cooler way to cool. Uses outside air to cool servers and major systems. This reduces energy and water consumption whenever outside temperatures drop to 58 degrees or below.

A greener loop. Employs a closed loop water cooling system, similar to how cars run water through a radiator to cool the engine. The circulating water regulates the temperatures – and reduces long-term costs and environmental impact.

T-Mobile Creation Center LEED-certified for sustainability.
The T-Mobile Creation Center in downtown Seattle was recently awarded LEED Gold status for its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System includes a stringent accreditation exam with only the highest performers being certified.

Six major areas are assessed: sustainable sites; water efficiency; energy and atmosphere; materials and resources; indoor environmental quality innovation; and, the design process.

One 3' x '5 window lets in more light than 100 60-watt incandescent bulbs. This building has daylight views in 90% of all occupied spaces.

The T-Mobile Creation Center excels in all six. Some highlights include:
  • A design that maximizes the energy-saving use of daylight in 90% of the occupied spaces.
  • Low-flow and dual-flow fixtures, which deliver a 20% reduction in water use.
  • Storing and collecting recyclables.
  • Encouraging alternative transportation, with storage for bikes, showers and changing rooms.
  • Lighting controls with daylight and occupancy sensors for increased efficiency.
  • Energy efficient appliances.
  • Recycling 75% of construction waste – and keeping it out of landfills.
  • Requiring 30% of furniture be reused furniture.
  • The use of Indoor Air Quality Management during construction.
  • The use of low-emitting sealants, adhesives, carpet, paints and coatings.

Energy conservation starts at home.
At T-Mobile, we understand how important energy conservation, environmental sustainability and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions really are. That's why in 2005, T-Mobile USA created an energy management department solely focused on these critical concerns.

The Energy Management Department captures detailed energy use and cost data in a central database and shares it with key decision-makers across the T-Mobile family. The department reviews all major new construction designs to ensure that energy conservation measures are a top priority.

Positive change means finding efficiencies everywhere, no matter how small.

Some highlights so far:
  • Provided energy efficient designs for our retail stores, including energy efficient lighting, efficient HVAC units, and energy management systems.
  • Installed a portfolio of over 400 energy management systems in T-Mobile owned retail stores.
  • Implemented lighting retrofit, lighting control, other HVAC control projects, and equipment replacement projects.
  • Issued Energy Conservation Guidelines for all facilities.
  • Issued Lighting System and Energy Management System guidelines for new construction and for retrofitting existing facilities.
  • Issued comprehensive energy conservation guidelines for data center construction.
  • Installed energy efficient HVAC systems utilizing benign refrigerant (R-410A) in new retail construction projects.
  • Encouraged employees to reduce pollution from automobiles through programs such as van pools, car pools, and vouchers to promote the use of mass transportation. T-Mobile has won the Commuter Challenge Diamond Award in Seattle for these efforts for the last three years.
  • Helped set up recycling programs for paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, printer and copier cartridges, cell phones and accessories, computers and electronic equipment.
